A method of shifting the timing of the data before it is written to the drive. The data pattern is examined and patterns which are known to cause bit shift when they are written on the media are written either early or late, depending on the desired effect. When this precompensated data is read back, the timing is correct because the bit shift and the precompensation have cancelled each other.
